Why is Metaphysics important?
Metaphysics is a difficult ideology to define. Since metaphysics and how it is studied and talked about has varied so much over time. But under this umbrella of metaphysics includes being and not being, the first causes of everything, existence as a whole, universals, and much more. While the importance of metaphysics is different depending on the philosopher you ask but if you ask me, I believe it is one of the most important branches of philosophy. Since as human beings our metaphysical position is essentially the foundation of all of our other beliefs and belief systems.
Most humans are petrified of death, me included. It's something that everyone is destined to experience and so understanding existence as a whole whether it be through religion or through a metaphysical position it can help to give you some solace. Some of this fear of death is due to the uncertainty of what happens after we die. Metaphysics is then important because there are tons of different metaphysical positions and they are all uncertain and are up for discussion but wrestling with this uncertainty and adopting a position can make us better equipped to not fear death and live a happier life as a result. Especially if metaphysics is our foundation of all our other beliefs then we will eventually have death overlapping our metaphysics position and this will help us have a little more certainty since our position in metaphysics is built upon studying other positions and solidifying our position some.
Another reason that metaphysics is important is the beauty of existence and the pursuit of understanding it. We can understand this especially with older folks who often reminisce on the past and the journey that they had throughout their life because we are uncertain about what comes after death whether it be Christian heaven or an afterlife whatever it may be we know for certain that we have this one life that we are currently experiencing and to try to understand not only ourselves but existence and reality is a noble worthwhile pursuit. Since we are at least guaranteed one shot at this life why not try to understand all of its complexities since only then can we garner up the understanding to eclipse life's beauty.
Finally, metaphysics is so important because of its overlap with physics and the sciences. This is shown through processes because science for example tells us what it is and its physical properties. But metaphysics will give us the why and the non-physical properties of whatever we are discussing. Metaphysics studies the nature of existence and science studies nature as a whole through empiricism and thus these two fields are interchangeable and work together towards a common goal that is trying to understand reality they just do it a bit differently.
